The well-known Zuidpand will disappear by October 2022
The well-known Zuidpand is entering its final months. Skyline Europe has started the dismantling and demolition works on the site where Mandelhof will soon rise. Mandelhof will be an open and green residence that should give the site, and by extension the entire area in the centre of Roeselare, its openness back.
Mandelhof gives the neighbourhood a new future
Soon, developer Skyline Europe will start the construction of Mandelhof, an ultra-modern and open building with 96 apartments and a spacious inner garden, giving the centre of Roeselare the necessary injection of calm and greenery and giving the area around the Klein Seminarie an open character again. “The open architecture of the two buildings must literally build a bridge between the vibrant city Roeselare has become in recent years and the green oasis of the inner garden,” says Liebaut.
Vacant, massive building
The bombastic Zuidpand has been vacant for quite some time. That sometimes causes some nuisance. In recent years, squatters moved into the former bowling hall in the basement. That will soon be a thing of the past, because the Zuidpand is making way for a brand-new, family-friendly green residential site. “Everyone knows the Zuidpand,” says project manager Wim Liebaut. “Not so much for what it is now, but for what it used to be. Older people certainly still remember the Sarma from the 1960s; younger generations know it thanks to the former bowling hall in the basement or the many shops above it. If you look at the Zuidpand today, you see a bombastic black building with a very closed, anonymous character. That will completely change in the future.”
Demolition works started
Before Skyline Europe can begin Mandelhof, some demolition work still has to take place first. The dismantling of the building at numbers 26-28 has already been completed. Its mechanical demolition took place during the Easter holidays.
In a second phase, the Zuidpand will be demolished. By October 2022, the demolition works must be completed. There will be no heavy truck traffic during drop-off and pick-up moments on school days.
